Melissa Gaspar, Midwife
Hello! I am Melissa Gaspar. I have spent three decades dedicated to serving women and families as they grow. I spent the first half as a labor and delivery nurse and the second half as a midwife.
I am originally from Montana where I owned a busy birth center. In 2024, my family decided to grow new roots in Mississippi and settle down a bit. I am married to a wonderfully supportive husband, Adam. Our children, Dakota, Olivia, Aidan, and Sarah are almost all grown. Adam and I are growing a little homestead complete with pigs, chickens, 7 dogs, and a few cats.
Supporting women and families through birth is my passion! I have been blessed to help hundreds of women and families navigate through pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. Every birth is a story. Every story is different. I am excited to help you through your journey! I am thankful to be part of your story!
What we offer
Prenatal Visits
Prenatal Visits are done in the comfort of your own home. If you have children at home, I welcome their little hands as they learn. Your visits will last between 30-60 minutes, or longer if needed. Prenatal visits are our time to discuss your health, your plans, and even your fears. My goal is to make you feel heard and supported during your pregnancy.
Labor and Birth
In health mothers with healthy pregnancies, labor should not be rushed. We will discuss your birth dreams and plans. Labor is powered by the maternal “love” hormone Oxytocin. When mothers feel supported in a quiet and loving environment, labor is more likely to progress in a less painful and natural pattern. After birth, you need the time to pause, enjoy your baby without all of the bright lights and interventions. You need time to say “hello!”.
The midwife’s duty to keep the mother and baby safe occasionally requires an advanced level of care. In that case, we will continue to support you during a transfer to the hospital and pick up care when you get back home.
Postpartum and Newborn Care
Mothers and families will be supported through their postpartum period for as long as they need. This includes assessment of healing, help with feeding preferences, and support through the emotional challenges that all of the new changes can bring.
We will discuss your wishes for newborn care including testing during your pregnancy. I strongly encourage all parents to know about their options for pediatric care after birth and the choices that are right for them.
I caught all five babies in this picture! I love this family!
Lactation Support
If you chose to breastfeed your baby, sometimes you need a little extra help. We will work together until you feel breastfeeding is going well for you, no matter how many visits you need.
I will also support women and families through breastfeeding difficulties who did not have a birth with New Roots. Please reach out for support if you need it. I am happy to help!
Yep, that’s me and the first time I was able to nurse my youngest daughter who spent time in the NICU. This was 17 years ago!
